Making a repair disappear

Brick is almost impossible to match. Clay colours shift between batches and kilns, decades of weathering change the original, and even a well-built extension in carefully chosen bricks tends to sit against the house looking obviously newer. The same goes for repointing, replaced lintels, filled-in doorways and patched frost damage — the work is sound, it just advertises itself.

Brick tinting fixes the colour rather than the brickwork. Breathable mineral-based pigments are applied by hand, brick by brick, in translucent layers built up until the new work reads as the old. It soaks into the surface rather than sitting on top like masonry paint, so the brick still breathes, the texture stays exactly as it was, and there's no film to peel or flake later.

We work with a supplier who attends site and colour matches in place, against your actual brick in your actual light, rather than guessing from a chart or a photograph. It's slow, careful work and it's genuinely satisfying — most people can't find the repair afterwards even when they know roughly where it was.

What brick tinting can fix

  • Extensions that don't match the original house
  • Repointing that has dried too pale or too grey
  • Replaced bricks, lintels & filled-in openings
  • Frost-damaged & spalled brickwork after repair
  • Whole-facade pigmentation & colour evening-out
  • On-site colour matching against your actual brick
01

Site visit & colour match

We look at the brickwork in daylight, assess what's causing the mismatch, and arrange on-site colour matching against the original rather than a chart.

02

Clean & prepare

The area is cleaned and any loose or damaged material dealt with first. Tinting corrects colour — it does not paper over failing brickwork.

03

Tint by hand

Breathable mineral pigments applied brick by brick in translucent layers, built up and checked against the surrounding wall until the repair disappears.

Homeowners who'd have us back

“The extension stuck out like a sore thumb for three years. They tinted it in two days and I genuinely cannot tell where it starts now.”

— Bracknell client

“Repointing had come out far too light across the whole front. Toned it right down and it looks like the house again.”

— Wokingham client

“I was sceptical it would look fake. It doesn't at all — the texture is untouched, it just matches.”

— Ascot client

Brick tinting painting & decorating FAQs

What is brick tinting?

It's colour-correcting brickwork by hand using breathable mineral pigments, so a repair, extension or repoint stops standing out. The pigment soaks into the brick face rather than forming a film on top, so the brick keeps breathing and the original texture is unchanged.

How is it different from painting brickwork?

Completely different. Masonry paint is an opaque film sitting on the surface — it hides the texture, traps moisture, and eventually peels, after which you're committed to repainting forever. Tinting is translucent and absorbed, so the brick still looks and behaves like brick. It's a correction, not a coating.

How long does brick tinting last?

It's permanent in normal use. Because the pigment is mineral-based and absorbed into the brick rather than sitting on it, there's no film to peel, flake or blister. It weathers with the wall rather than against it.

Can you match my existing brick exactly?

In the large majority of cases, yes. We work with a supplier who attends site and colour matches in place, against your real brick in real daylight, adjusting until it's right. Heavily glazed or very unusual bricks are harder, and we'll tell you honestly at the site visit if we think it won't work.

Do you cover areas outside Bracknell?

Yes — we tint across Berkshire and into Surrey and south-west London. It's a specialist job, so we travel for it more than we would for general decorating.
